• There is no formal ban on importing electronic cigarettes for personal use as of mid-2026, despite conflicting information online. Electronic devices should be kept in carry-on luggage due to battery safety regulations (prohibited in checked luggage). Traditional cigarettes are expensive in Sri Lanka (approx. 1000 RUB per pack), so travelers are advised to bring a sufficient supply.
• For travelers flying to Sri Lanka with only hand luggage and wishing to bring back souvenirs like spices, tea, or shells, it is advisable to purchase checked baggage. Some travelers have successfully used a larger suitcase (L) for purchases and a smaller one (S) for personal items, checking both. Bringing shells back is generally permitted, but destination country import regulations should be verified.
• Standard mail between Sri Lanka and Russia takes approximately two weeks. For urgent or sensitive documents, it is highly recommended to avoid standard postal services to reduce the risk of loss. The most reliable and fastest method is to entrust documents to travelers flying directly between the two countries or to use specialized international courier services (DHL/FedEx/UPS), though availability may vary by region.
• When flying back from Sri Lanka (e.g., via Aeroflot), passengers can transport fruits in both checked baggage and carry-on luggage. Sturdy fruits like pineapples and mangoes can be wrapped in paper and packed in checked bags. Delicate fruits (rambutans, mangosteens) are best transported in carry-on boxes (up to 5 kg). Airline staff at Colombo Airport (CMB) may have varying levels of strictness: some shifts strictly enforce the 23kg checked bag limit, while others tolerate slight overweights up to 25.4kg without charging extra.
