• EU Directive 2004/38/EC facilitates visa issuance for family members of EU citizens. It applies specifically when the EU citizen is not residing in their country of citizenship. It allows for easier visa processing for joint travel to other EU member states.
• To register a vehicle in Finland without a Finnish residence permit (VNJ): 1. **Eligibility:** Possible if you own property in Finland and have a temporary Finnish Tax Identification Number (TAX ID). 2. **Required Documents:** Passport, TAX ID. 3. **Process (as of early 2025):** Visit a local vehicle registration office (Katsastus). 4. **Tax Payment:** Since your foreign address may not be in the registry, tax information (amount due) will likely be emailed to you after phone identification. Call the tax authority directly for this. 5. **Insurance:** Insurance will likely be more expensive for individuals without a prior Finnish insurance history. 6. **Transfer Code:** Ensure you have the transfer code from the seller. 7. **Note:** Specific procedures may change; verify with local authorities. Insurance procedures might require a different approach than tax payment.
• The practice of stamping passports upon entry into Finland may vary. While some travelers entering on a visa report not receiving a physical entry stamp but undergoing biometric data collection (fingerprints and photo), the presence or absence of a stamp can depend on the specific border control point and whether the entry is on a visa or a residence permit (VNJ). It is advisable to check current procedures if a passport stamp is a personal requirement.
• Finnish border authorities at Helsinki airport perform ad-hoc checks on residence permit holders to verify they still possess the funds declared during the application process. Insufficient proof can lead to residence permit cancellation. Essential documents include bank statements, employment contracts, or 2-NDFL certificates. Do not proactively submit extra documents unless requested, but be prepared to provide evidence if asked.
• Bus routes operate from Tallinn to St. Petersburg, including Lux Express and SKC Avto. These routes typically go through Narva and terminate at Obvodny Canal. Some services may involve a foot crossing at the border. Ferry services between Helsinki and Tallinn are also an option for onward travel.
• All land border crossing points between Russia and Finland are completely closed to passenger and vehicle traffic since December 2023. No exceptions are currently in place for regular travelers, regardless of passport or vehicle registration.
• Border customs (specifically Estonia-Russia, e.g., Koidula) currently impose strict restrictions on electronics. Even used personal cameras and lenses are frequently confiscated. Confiscated items are often held in paid storage facilities at the border. Limit for duty-free import into Russia is 500 EUR, but sanctions often lead to arbitrary seizure regardless of the item's value or age. Travelers are advised to be prepared to surrender such items or refrain from bringing them across these checkpoints.
